Introducing Kittens Dottie & Dash
Here’s what has been keeping my hands full this past week.
Well, without further ado, let me introduce to you 9-week old kitten twins…Dottie & Dash!
After losing our fur-baby Xena in December, Alan and I were certain we could never open our hearts to that kind of hurt again. It’s a legitimate feeling, in addition to not being sure we wanted the responsibility of taking care of a pet.
I mourned Xena very, very deeply. I journaled, I read books on pet loss, and I slowly started to separate pain from everlasting love. Just 3 days after losing Xena, I visited a friend who has a cat. I was worried it would be incredibly painful to pet another cat, but it was therapeutic and joyful. Simply put, I’m a cat person.
Then, about a month later, I started looking at funny cat videos online and telling friends that we were looking for kittens. I filled out applications for the local rescue organizations. We considered adopting an adult cat and I can’t tell you how many times I cried looking at pictures of shelter cats, but Alan and I both wanted the experience of raising kittens again.
Finally, I saw someone on Craigslist looking to get rid of a litter. The owner ended up being an overwhelmed college student who had failed to get his cat spayed. Alan and I met him in a parking lot and adopted the last two of six kittens. They were pretty terrified after being separated from their litter mates and mama, and then having to be in the car for a 2 1/2 hour ride home.
They spent the first couple of days huddled together in the back of our guest bathroom cabinet that we lined with a kitty bed, a hot water bottle, and a pet-safe heated disk I bought from Amazon. It didn’t take long for them to get curious and start to interact with us.
The pair we adopted are identical, but one is a boy and one is a girl. Alan and I created a whole list of names to consider, but ended up with Dottie and Dash. They both have adorable spotted tummies:
It’s not easy to get a photo since they’re so busy. It’s also impossible to tell them apart except by touch (Dash’s fur is coarse and Dottie’s is soft):
As adorable and fun as they are to have, these kittens require a ton of care. It would be silly for me not to emphasize how important it is to spay and neuter our pets, since so many are euthanized each year or have to live their entire lives in shelters. These kittens had fleas and had never visited the vet for shots.
I’m super grateful to have the time and resources to give them the care they need. That first visit to the vet actually went pretty smoothly:
Dottie passed out in the crate on the way home:
We’ll have to go back to the vet again in a month for more shots and testing to make sure they are completely healthy and free of inherited disease. In the meantime, our guest bedroom has now been converted to a kitten playroom:
And, for now, we’ve fashioned a baby gate to keep them confined to the safety of the downstairs:
These two kittens stole our hearts pretty quickly and I’m so happy to share our joy with you.
If you’re looking to adopt a pet this year, I highly suggest going through a local rescue organization to ensure that you get the support you need (just do a search for rescue animals or check out Petfinder.com). And, again, please make sure to spay and neuter your pet to help reduce the number of animals who need homes!

ohmyfreakinggoodness!!!!!!!! Your kittens are SO CUTE! I scrolled up and down this post several times just to soak up as much kitteny cuteness as I can. Terry also finds them cute – he is a big cat person. If I wasn’t allergic, I’m pretty sure we’d have a cat.
I’m so so happy for you and Alan. What lucky kitties to have such, sweet, loving parents <3
Awww, thank you, Kimmy!!! I agree, they are pretty cute. 🙂 They are growing SO FAST, too. I loooove being a kitty mom again, and Alan is pretty in love with them as well. I’m so glad your eyes are doing better. XOXO.
They. Are. So. Cute!!!
Thanks, Andrea! They have started snuggling now too, which just melts my heart, and makes up for all the work they are, ha! 🙂
So glad you decided to honor Xena by saving these cuties and sharing your love with them! Litter mates are so much fun.
Thanks for sharing such a nice sentiment, Anna. You made me smile. XOXOXOXO.
Oh, my goodness!!! They are beyond cute and I love their names! I’m so happy for you, Carrie!
Thank you, Mandy!!! These little ones have healed and warmed my heart. It’s so rewarding to take care of little ones. XOXOXO.
They’re so adorable! So happy for you. I raised two of my cats together since they were a little over a month old–one I found literally crossing the road in pretty bad shape, and the other I adopted from a shelter to keep her company. It’s such a joyful experience having kittens! Can’t wait to follow along as they grow.
Ohhhh, thank you, Becky! What lucky cats you have to have been saved from a horrible fate. I would love to see some pics of your fur-babies!!! XOXO.
OMG Carrie, Dottie and Dash are just perfect, how cute!!!! You’ll never lose an ounce of the love you had/have for Xena, you’ll just be able to share some. I have never owned a kitten but I bet you’ll have a lot of stories to tell, hope you’ll share some. Best wishes to your fur babies.
Thank you, Judy!!! My heart has definitely grown even bigger now that I have Dottie and Dash to love. They are so sweet and it’s been really rewarding to see them grow and develop just these past 12 days or so that we’ve had them. XOXO.
Carrie, I am SO SO very happy for you!!! I wish you and Alan and the new fur-babies many many many years of joy and laughter!!!
Thank you so much, Gina!!! We have already fallen head over heals in love with these two, and they have become a big part of our lives. It feels nice to have babies around again. XOXOXOXO.
awe…super cuteness times 2!!! congrats on the new family members 🙂 there will be lots of fun times ahead. once an animal lover always an animal lover…. getting over the pain from losing one of your furbabies is very hard…but there is always room in your heart and life for all the others you will have. You will always have cherished memories of each of them forever!! enjoy your new additions Dottie & Dash and don’t forget to post cute photos of them in future posts!! I have 4 grand cats…. Yoshi (his sidekick Luigi passed 2 yrs ago), Wild Bill Hickock aka WB (lives up to his name), Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane aka CJ (she too lives up to her name she is a super clutz sometimes). All these furbabies are white with gray. seems my daughter has a theme lol
Thank you, Debbie!!! In the depths of my grief, someone told me that my heart was big enough to love again, without taking away any of the part of my heart reserved for Xena. I have found that to be true. I still have so much love for Xena, but now there is even more love in my life with these two new fur-babies. I loooooooove your grand-cats’ names…too cute! Have a great weekend. XOXO.
Squeeeeeee! (I can’t help it. They’re so adorable!) Adopting 2 kittens together is just the best. Congratulations! ❤
Thanks, Heather!!! The rescue organizations I looked into emphasized the importance of adopting a pair of kittens, especially if they are younger than 5 months. This helps socialize them, not to mention they play so much together that it helps take the burden off of my husband and me to keep them occupied. 🙂
Congrats! I have a huge smile on my face because of your sweet kittens. Please know you did the right thing. As a long time cat person, I have a prediction to make. See if this runs true for your cats. I’ve found that male cats for whatever reasons are generally warmer to their humans, even if only slightly so, than are females. Also, please never let them outside.
Hi Donald! Thanks for the note. Your prediction about male cats being more affectionate is already true for our sweet babies. Dash is perfectly fine being held and immediately starts purring, but Dottie has yet to enjoy being held. I have only had female cats in the past, so I am enjoying the experience of having a more snuggly little boy kitty. And, yes, I should have emphasized the importance of cats being indoors only, plus never, ever declawing cats. Take care!
