In this blog post, I’ll review whether OWYN Protein Shake is healthy or not? Find out what this product’s nutrition pros and cons are so you can decide whether to consume it. For most people, OWYN is likely okay in moderation, but is not considered a healthy food due to the processed ingredients it contains.

OWYN Protein Shake Facts

OWYN Protein Shake is a plant-based protein drink designed to provide a “convenient and nutritious beverage for individuals seeking to support their active lifestyles.”

OWYN (Only What You Need) is a portfolio company of Purchase Capital.

In addition to the low-sugar OWYN Protein Shakes and Protein Powders, the company also carries a line of sugar-free products, including Pro Elite High-Protein Powders, High-Protein Complete Nutrition Shakes, Doubleshot Protein Coffee Shakes, and Pro Elite High-Protein Shakes.

These plant-based protein shakes are fortified with essential minerals and vitamins, including vitamin B12, vitamin D, and calcium.

The company markets OWYN Protein Shakes as suitable for vegans, vegetarians, and people interested in incorporating more plant-based protein options into their diets.

See my related article on the differences between vegan and clean eating diets.

These shakes are also free from common food allergens like dairy, soy, gluten, and artificial flavors. The ingredient label doesn’t contain any artificial ingredients.

OWYN Protein Shake Ingredients

At the time of the writing of this article, the OWYN dark chocolate flavored protein shake ingredients include:

  • Purified water
  • Organic pumpkin seed protein
  • Organic flax oil
  • Pea protein
  • Organic inulin (from Jerusalem artichoke)
  • Organic cane sugar
  • Natural flavors
  • Cocoa powder (processed with alkali)
  • Sea salt
  • Organic monk fruit extract
  • Organic stevia leaf extract
  • Sunflower lecithin
  • Gellan gum
  • Calcium phosphate
  • Dipotassium phosphate
  • Potassium chloride
  • Organic greens blend (organic kale, organic spinach, organic broccoli)

This ingredient list can sometimes change slightly based on manufacturing updates or specific product versions, so it’s always best to check the packaging for the most accurate information.

Each 20-ounce bottle of OWYN contains 20 grams of protein with all of the essential amino acids.

It should be noted that the protein comes from pea protein which is a processed food and not necessarily the most bioavailable source of protein.

Let’s examine some of the main ingredients in OWYN plant-based shakes in more details so you can learn more about what they might mean for your overall health.

Natural flavors

The term “natural flavors” lacks a clear definition in food labeling, which can cause some confusion among consumers. This confusion allows manufacturers to designate various ingredients as “natural,” even if specific components or production processes are not inherently healthy.

It is also worth noting that the nutrition label on OWYN Protein Shake fails to specify the exact source or extraction method of its natural flavors, raising concerns about potential synthetic or unhealthy practices.

For example, some companies employ extraction techniques like enzyme-assisted extraction, which may involve solvents and high heat. Though not disclosed to consumers, these methods may result in “incidental additives.”

Moreover, without a standardized definition of “natural,” genetically engineered crops could be labeled as such, further complicating matters.

Gellan Gum

Gellan gum is a water-soluble polysaccharide produced by bacteria, used as a gelling agent, stabilizer, and thickener in various processed foods and beverages, such as plant-based milk and desserts.

It helps improve texture and suspension, preventing ingredients from separating.

As a general rule, it’s better to avoid food products with added gums as it is an indicator that the food is processed.

Pea Protein

Pea protein is a plant-based protein extracted from peas.

It is typically used to increase the protein content of foods like protein powders and protein bars. Pea protein is rich in non-heme iron and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians who avoid animal proteins.

Getting enough protein is helpful for weight management. Higher protein intake has been associated with better weight control.

People with sensitivities to peas should avoid products with pea protein.

Digestive discomfort, such as bloating, may occur, especially in those with sensitive digestive systems.

Concerns also exist regarding heavy metal contamination, so choosing reputable brands with rigorous quality control is crucial. OWYN uses non-GMO ingredients, but does not use organic ingredients.

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is a seed oil that is susceptible to oxidation. When this happens, harmful compounds can form, impacting cholesterol levels and increasing the risk of cardiac disease.

While sunflower oil itself is not considered a common allergen, individuals with known allergies to sunflower seeds may experience adverse reactions to products containing this ingredient.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, and, in some rare cases, anaphylaxis

Sunflower oil also has a high omega-6 fatty acid content, which, in excess, can promote inflammation and potentially contribute to chronic diseases.

Sugar

Although OWYN carries sugar-free protein products, the Protein Shake and Protein Powders contain 4 grams of sugar per serving.

Added sugar in processed foods like OWYN can contribute to various health conditions, such as obesity, blood sugar spikes, food cravings, brain fog, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, fatigue, depression, and tooth decay.

Consuming too much sugar can lead to diabetes and other serious health conditions.

Dipotassium phosphate

Dipotassium phosphate is often used as a food additive, stabilizer, or emulsifier to improve the texture and shelf life of processed foods and beverages.

It helps regulate acidity, prevent clumping, and enhance flavor in items like dairy products, coffee creamers, and powdered drinks.

Although generally recognized as safe in moderate amounts, high consumption can disrupt the balance of potassium and phosphate in the body, potentially affecting kidney function or causing electrolyte imbalances in individuals with pre-existing conditions.

Nutrition Pros

OWYN Protein Shake is free of allergens, including dairy, soy, gluten, wheat, egg, peanuts, and tree nuts. It is suitable for vegans and is available in a convenient 12 fluid ounce serving size.

While the OWYN Protein Shake and Protein Powders contain 4 grams of added sugar, the Pro Elite High Protein Powders, High Protein Complete Nutrition Shakes, Doubleshot Protein Coffee Shakes, and Pro Elite High Protein Shakes contain zero sugar, no sugar alcohols, artificial sweeteners, or stevia.

These protein drinks may be a convenient way for people to get plant-based proteins.

Nutrition Cons

OWYN Protein Shakes contain highly processed ingredients such as seed oils and can contain up to 350mg of sodium per serving. People on a low-sodium diet should avoid taking this product.

It is unclear if the natural flavor in OWYN Protein Shake is created using potential synthetic or unhealthy practices.

This product also contains gums which may cause digestive issues in people sensitive to the ingredient.

Other concerns include the plastic bottle and the fact that the ingredients are not organic.

While the other products are sugar-free, the OWYN Protein Shake and Protein Powders contain 4 grams of added sugar, which could cause health problems.

OWYN Nutrition FAQs

Can OWYN protein shakes be used as a meal replacement?

The OWYN website states that OWYN Protein Shakes can supplement your regular diet as a snack or post-workout fuel. While the OWYN Complete Nutrition Shake provides balanced macronutrients and may be a suitable meal replacement, it is best to consult with a healthcare provider or certified nutritionist to determine if OWYN products are ideal for your diet. It is always best to use real food for every meal.

Are there any side effects associated with consuming OWYN protein shakes regularly?

Having an OWYN (Only What You Need) Protein Shake occasionally is relatively safe for most people. However, as with any dietary supplement, some individuals may experience side effects or adverse reactions, especially if they have specific sensitivities or allergies to the product’s ingredients.

Some potential side effects or adverse reactions associated with regularly consuming OWYN protein shakes may include gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating, gas, or digestive issues. This may happen because certain ingredients, such as fiber, pea protein, or guar gum, can be difficult for some people to digest.

Individuals with allergies or sensitivities to ingredients such as pea protein, sunflower, and flaxseed oil, all common ingredients in OWYN protein shakes, may experience allergic reactions such as itching, digestive issues, swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing.

Conclusions

OWYN Protein Shakes can be a nutritious option for individuals seeking an occasional plant-based protein supplement. Focusing on high protein and allergen-free formulations, they provide a convenient source of protein for various dietary preferences.

However, as with any dietary supplement, it’s essential to consider individual health needs and potential sensitivities to ingredients before incorporating them into your regular diet. This product contains processed ingredients that may adversely affect your health.

Instead of using a protein product like OWYN protein shakes, focus on getting your protein from real food sources and a balanced diet.

You can add homemade lentil protein powder to your smoothies or nuts and nut butter, seeds and seed butter, beans, legumes, and lentils to your diet for added protein (see my list of favorite clean protein powders). Lean protein from animal sources will be the most bioavailable source of protein for humans.
